It appears there were Conners and Conaways in early Somerset County records, though they may not have been of the same family in some cases, the majority likely were. Seventeenth century clerks frequently interchanged these names in the documentation of the era. One can only imagine the name being heard as "Connery"or Connerwy" and thus the results. It also appears multiple spellings endured, as is the case with many early families throughout the lower eastern shore. There is evidence of early Conner and Conaway families, with variations of each within the same families(see Somerset Co.tax lists). It certainly seems that the Connaway/ Conaway/ Conoway name maintained its structure predominantly in what became the Worcester section of early Somerset, and later as the northern section became Sussex County Delaware. Adding to the confusion is the immigration of other Conner and possibly Conway families into adjacent townships and counties. The following study makes no attempt to alter the original spelling , (or transcribed), in the record. But personal research has noted where many spellings of Conner in the transcripts of the 17th century are actually spelled Conway or Connaway in the originals. This brings to point, as paraphrased from the book "A Supplement to The Early Settlers of Maryland by Carson Gibb, Ph. D., that the most dramatic difference in the comparison of the original land grants, patents, surveys and warrants to the transcriptions (copies of original documents made at the same time period to be filed at the Capitol, St Mary's City, Md. now in Annapolis, Md. and held at the Hall of Records, Annapolis), was the significant difference in spelling of the names. --R. VIRGINIA
There were numerous Conner, Conway, and Connaway families on the early Eastern shore of Virginia. Edwin Conway/Connaway is hailed as the progenitor of these Va. families. Also a Dennis Connaway resided in this area and had issue. But isolated from these families is an early entry for a Phillip Conner. It is interesting that soon after Phillip Conner was transported into Va., there does not seem to be any further record of him in this area, in either the wills, deeds, or court records, nor any "Connard" family whose name appears in the earliest records of Somerset County in Liber I.K.L. and is described as being orignally from the Accomack County, Va. . It is possible, this is the same Phillip Conner who entered into Maryland and resided in Somerset Co. Though no absolute link has been established, the records gleaned are here for the reader to peruse.

(Note Re:Taxlists HH-"Household" numbers have no significance other then to show proximity to neighbor, since they are only the order in which the list was taken. Neighbors are listed in order to prove that persons named are the same persons listed from year to year. They may or may not have genealogical significance, but often these are they same names we find listed among a family's deed records or as witnesses amongst the family's legal records.)

The Boston Family of Maryland by Matthew Wise c. 1986 The Delmar Co, Charlotte N.C. (used by permission)
Cornelius Ward, progenitor of the Wards of Somerset Co., Maryland, was in Somerset Co. as early as 1663/64. The close ties of the Cornelius Ward family in Somerset Co. with the Dougherty and Riggin families and the fact that Cornelius Ward named one of his major tracts "Cork" suggest that the Wards may have originated in Ireland.
1. Cornelius Ward, b. c1640;
d. Som. Co, by 24 Feb, 1722/ mar (Jan. 1666/67, ceremony performed by Henry
Boston) Margaret Franklin, On 25 Feb, 1663/64 Cornelius secured a pat. from
Lord Baltimore to 200 acres, "Bear Point," in Som. Co. Dividing
Creek. On 4 July 1677 he was assigned by Col. Wm Stevens 100 acres, "Chestnut
Ridge," a long corridor of just west of what is now Hopewell,
and on 16 June 1678 Cornelius likewise secured 500 acres nearby, "Corke,"
on the south sf the Annemessex River near the mouth of the said river, more
specifically located at the headwaters of the Little Annemessex just north of
the present site of Crisfield. This area has remained the center of the Ward
family ever since. In 1679 Cornelius secured a patent to "Long Acre,"
100 acres between the Little the Great Annemessex, northwest of "Corke";
in 1682, "White Oak Swamp," 150 acres, and "Chestnut Ridge,"
100 acres; and in a resurvey and enlargement of "Long Acre," 525 acres.
Cornelius Ward of Little Annemessex signed his will 27 Dec. 1722
He bequeathed to John Rigging the plantation on which Riggin is living; to son
Samuel, the plantation where testator "is now living on" , to son
Stephen, the plantation he is living on (with re-mainder to William Ward,
son of Samuel, if Stephen should have no lawful issue); to son Cornelius, the
plantation he is living on, to Stephen Ward, son of Thomas, land lying
between that of Cornelius and Samuel. He also named daughters Catherine, Mary,
Marget, and sons Jonathan (excepted from will), Joseph (to have one negro) and
James, as well as wife Marget. Samuel Ward was to be executor (Som.Wills EB9:91).
Children (born at Annemessex, Somerset Co., Md.;births recorded in Som. Deeds
