onoho or Donohue, more properly O'Donoghue, is one of the most important as well as the most numerous name in Ireland. In Irish O Donnachadha, it denotes descendant of Donnchadh, anglice Donogh, a personal name. Several distinct septs of the name existed in early times. Of these the principal are O'Donoghue of Desmond, O'Donoghue of Ui Maine (Hy Many) and O'Donoghue of Co. Cavan. The modern representatives of the two later usually spell the name Donohoe, and are still found plentifully in Counties Galway and Cavan, while the first named are mostly in Counties Kerry and Cork, i.e. in the Desmond Country. Daniel Donoho was one of many Irish immigrants to settle in early Somerset Co. Md. c. 1660's. He likely came as a young refugee and gained his fortune in the new province, but Daniel Donoho ended up a prominent and substantial landowner. Once established in Somerset Co., it appears he married an Alice (Dormon or Dennis q.v.) by 1671, who lived through at least 1697 .On 10 Aug. 1669, Daniel bought 150 A. in Brinkley's District from Morris Lister[sic] called Irish Grove. On 3 March 1674 he patented Daniel's Den, and on 9 June 1679 Merchant's Treasure, a tract patented by Stephen Coffin[sic] Costen and assigned to Daniel Donoho, both near his original purchase in Somerset. As Daniel's family grew he explored east into Worcester Co., in what became Atkinson's District, just east of Dividing Creek. Daniel bought 150 A. called Smith's Choice, 7 May 1679. He patented on 15 Feb. 1681, Donohoe's Choice, 207 A. and on 1 Apr. 1681, Donohoe's Second Choice for 350 A. Also, in Worcester Co., he patented 8 April 1681 Unlooked For. It appears Daniel's eldest son William patented land in Worcester Co. also. On 4 Oct 1688 William Donoho patented What You Will, 250 A. in the same Atkinson's District. William eventually moved further north into what is now known as Indian River Inlet area, Kent/ Sussex Co. De., where in 1734 patented Same Design on the Baltimore River.(This was then known as the Baltimore Hundred section of Somerset Co., Md.). Both these lands owned by William passed to his son Somersett Donoho of Kent Co. De., who on 27 Jan 1737 sold What you Will to Teague Riggin and on 20 Oct 1740 sold Same Design to John Burnett/Barrett[sic]

(*There appears to be a relationship between the Dennis family and the Donohos, as Ellis[sic]Alice was the name of Donnock Dennis' wife, dau and also the name of some of his grandaughters. Donnock Dennis' other daughter Mary married Phillip Conway** [sic], Their are a number land transactions between Phillip Conner/Conway and Daniel Donoho, which supports the possiblity of some familial relationship. Matthew Wise, in The Boston family of Maryland, speculates that a Ellis Dennis III.may have married Esau Boston, though he emphasizes that it is only hypothetical, either dau of Donnick Jr or John Dennis. Other Dennis manuscripts have stated Ellis Dennis, Jr., m., first, Henry Hudson and second, John Gillett, son of Germaine and Anne Gillett. {A Somerset Sampler- Lower Delmarva Genealogical Society}, though neither of these predictions have been proven. The fact Daniel had a son named Dormon is the catalyst to connect the Dennises and Donohos, as Dennis Donnock married Ellis Nehulian, who was said to be the daughter to Dormon Nehulian and Ellis_____(granted headright to a patent 27 Nov 1657 in Northampton Co.- Torrence) . Torrence {Old Somerset} and Maryland Calendar of Wills {Jane Baldwin Cotton} claim Donnock married 2nd an Elizabeth _____Bodwick?) The dates for Ellis Dennis Jr. do not work for the birth of Daniel Donoho's children, thus lending to the theory Daniel Donoho actually may have married the widow of Dormon Nehulain. Confusing the matter more, it also appears that Daniel Donoho, Donnock Dennis and Phillip Connaway were contemporaries, which would make one think Ellis/Alice was the dau of Donnick Dennis m. Henry Hudson, whose will states that his wife was named Ellis and a son named Dennis and other proofs of that realtionship.

Jonathan Jackson, father to Joshua Jackson, owned land in Wicomico County
(Warwick), 200 acres, half belonged to William Richardson, father to John,
half to Jacksons.

In the Judiciary Records of Somerset County, November 1738, there's a reference of testifying on the boundaries of Donoho's Choice. At the time Martha Saymore, 80, widow of Daniel Donoho Sr., stated that Daniel had told of the boundaries 40 years before. Dorman Donoho, then 52, and Charles Townsend, 61, Daniel's son-in-law also testified.

1In 1842, Julia Ann (Julianne) dau of William Richard Donoho, married William Richard Donoho her "cousin," son of James Donoho. She had children Elizabeth Ann Donoho and William Washington Donoho b.c. 1844 and c.1845, respectively, well after the death of her parents. In 1831 James Donoho made a will which was adminstered by Alexander Donoho, in which his heirs were listed as son, William R. Donoho and Sophia Donoho. Later an administration (S.W.J. #11, f.118) of the estate of William R. Donoho listed his heirs as son William Washington Donoho and dau. Elizabeth A. Donoho. Further proof is contained a deed from 11 Mar 1845 where William R. Donoho and Julianne Donoho, his wife, purchased property from Marcellus Jones. Apparently soon after, her husband William R. Donoho died. She exchanged this property with her brother for some property that her father had left her brother, but before the transaction was completed, she died. Julianne's dau Elizabeth Ann (around 16 year old) had already married James W. T. Phillips.

This went into the Equity Record as follows:

Liber L.W. #3, f. 248 Be it remembered on 27th March 1860 a certain Christopher C. Donoho and James W. T. Phillips, with there attorney Samuel A. Graham, Esq. appeared and exhibited in Circuit Court for Somerset Co. in Equity their bill of complaint against a certain Elizabeth Ann Phillips and William Washington Donoho. Now Christopher C. Donoho of Somerset County is guardian to William W. Donoho, (15 yrs old) and Elizabeth Ann Donoho (not yet 17 years old), now Elizabeth Ann Phillips, infants under 21 years of age and James W. T. Phillips, husband and next of kin to Elizabeth Ann Phillips. Now Wm. W. Donoho and Elizabeth Ann Phillips are seized with a tract of land which was conveyed from Marcellus Jones to Julia Ann Donoho, wife of William R. Donoho, who was the mother of the said infants. See deed Marcellus Jones to Julia Ann Donoho, wife of Wm. R. Donoho. Now this Julia is seized with 1/3 undivided third which descended to her and Christopher C. Donoho and William A. Donoho, from William R. Donoho, father of said Julia, Christopher and William A. Donoho and whereas the said Julia agreed to sell to her brother the said Christopher C. Donoho all her said undivided interest in the said real estate for the sum of $1000 and has joined her said husband in a bond of conveyance to said Christopher Donoho all of her said undivided interest with express agreement that the purchase money arising from the sale be applied to the other real estate to be conveyed to Julia in fee simple.

Captain Alexander Donoho, a tall man weighing two hundred forty pounds was a large slave owner. By intrigue, the notorious Patty Cannon ,whose criminality in slave dealing is so vividly protrayed in George Alfred Townsend's "The Entailed Hat", secured one his valuable colored men. By some method that was never made known, Captain Donoho located the colored man at Reliance, then Johnson's Cross-roads. On his arrival at the Cannon home, he was ushered into the dining room and very courteously treated until he told his business. Then Patty Cannon excused herself and made an effort to leave the room but, with gun in hand, he bid her stay until the colored man made his appearance. Captain Donoho was a man of great courage and was absolutely fearless in emergencies. He well knew his fate if his authority was surrendered. He got the man and went home, never seeing or being bothered by Patty Cannon again.

Wetipquin Historical Society

Capt. Alexander Donoho served in the House of Representatives and as a Senator representing Somerset County, c.1828-1850. He also had a very large plantation and was very involved in the shipping and mercantile business. He was a large man, over 6 ft. and over 200 pounds, and though fathered many children, only had one known daughter survive, Mary H.A. Donoho. She married Tubman R. Conway, whose heirs inherited Alexander's land in Wetipquin. Disease ravaged this family as he had at least 5 children, his brother and his brother's wife, all die quite young. He raised his brother William's orphaned children, William Alexander Richard Donoho and Christopher Columbus Donoho, and his uncle James' orphaned children William Richard Donoho and Sophia E.R.Donoho. His nickname was "Uncle Sandy", allegedly due to his sandy blond hair and his large plantation was known as "Sandy Hill". At one point he may have owned over 60 slaves, but oral history from the area states he was a very fair and honest individual. He was renowned for passing a law which involved the guaranteed 1/3rd a widow received of her husband's estate, and supposively, as large as he was, was carried by the exuberant women of Baltimore down Light St. after its passage.- R.
