Jno Croshaw 10 Dec 1651York Co. Va 1000 acres -in Poplar Neck....for
transportation of 20 persons.....(incld) Francis Newball
(among others)
He seems to have migrated to Somerset County circa 1678 from
Accomack County
VA. There is a record of him from Accomack from year 1674. It is from the Accomack
County VA Court Order Abstracts,
Volume 4, by JoAnne Riley McKay. On page 44:
"From 'Pocomoke, Accomack' on 20 April 1674, Tho. Newbold posted the following
notice on the court door: If anyone had claims
or demands, the should go to the house of Mr. Jno. Renny. Signed Tho. Newbold".
Later, on page 116/117:
"On 20 October 1674, Jno. Willie, tallow chandler of London, had married
Elizabeth, who was widow and administrator of Robert Pitt,
late mariner of London. Elizabeth was the mother and guardian of Robt. Pitt,
the only child of her deceased husband. They gave an
11 year lease to Thomas Newbold, merchant of London, on a plantation containing
3000 acres on the Pokamack River and
Chesepiaaack Bay in Accomack County Virginia. Part of the land had been patented
by Pitt and part assigned to him by Col.
Edmond Scarburg. The rent (400 pounds of tobacco per year on 20 October) was
for the use of young Robert Pitt;....signed 20
October 1674, John Willie and Eliz. (W) Willie. Witnesses: Stevan Worington,
Sebastian Gingee, Wm. Gingee, Wm. Corey
(notoary), and Josia. Jones.
"....Mr. Thomas Newbold, merchant of London, who was now bound for Virginia.
The Willies also gave Newbold power of
attorney to collect debts due to them. Signed in London by John Willie and Elizabeth
(EW) Willie. Witnesses: Josia. Jones, Jno
Pakeman, Wm. Gengee, Stevan Morington, and Sabastian Gingee. Recorded 14 May
1675 by Jno Washbourne."
So Thomas is in Accomack Virginia in April of 1674 to post a notice, and then
apparently travels back to England where he is
given power of attorney by the Willies, as well as getting lease on lots of
land.
